Rematriation: Eternamente Tethered

Curators Message

Rematriation: Eternamente Tethered is a visual representation of the Masters thesis “Diasporic Borikua Rematriation: An Undisciplined Ethnography of Indigenous Puerto Ricans and their return to the Archipelago''. This exhibition extends the conversation beyond the written word, providing a space where researcher, participatory community members, artists and the larger diasporic Borikua community may converge and collectively experience the ebbs and flows of migration, diasporic identity and remaining connected to one's motherland. Each room is representative of a specific diasporic theme, and simply furnished with elements that are reminiscent of the homes within the diaspora and archipelago. Visitors are asked to contribute to the dialogue between art and themed room, introducing their own experiences to the larger conversation. Through the themes Destierro, Bregar, Emotional Embeddedness and Blood Memory, Rematriation: Eternamente Tethered transforms into a story breathing life into the lived experiences of diasporic Borikuas and the path to Rematriation.

The artists in Rematriation: Eternamente Tethered seek to build connections, their art serving as a medium from which the past, current and future exists interwoven between the U.S and the archipelago. Each artist taps into their own Borikua experience, while illuminating the complexities of maintaining a connection to the Boriken.
